A SIFFORD – GOODMAN
FAMILY HISTORY

Including many others – being the genealogy of Clyde Lovell Goodman's family

Harry T. Sifford, Granite Quarry N. C. has done some of the early genealogy work.  He has personally visited the European sites that he references in the family history. Our family is very grateful to him for the research that he has done. He plans to put the information together into a book that he intends to publish on the Sifford Family. Some of the following is the result of his research.

Harry Sifford first identified the Sifford family in Switzerland (“Helvetia”).  Some members of the family then migrated to the Erbach Sovereignty (a Hessen State) of Swabia, modern day southeastern Germany. The majority of the Sifford farms/property were in the area of what is now Olfen, Germany.  Information was also found in Beerfelden (also a Hessen State) in the Beerfelden Lutheran Church regarding the Sifford family.  (Olfen and Beerfelden were apparently joined as part of the same district in the 1970s being geographically in the same area of Germany.)  These are both in the southeastern part of Germany.  From there the Siffords migrated to the United States through the port of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This migration took place before 1750. From there they scattered all over the country.

SO WE BEGIN WITH THE SIFFORDS:

Stephan Siefert or Syfferg, 1614 – 1679, born in Helvetia, Switzerland ---- first generation identified

(Swabia was an independent sovereignty that was part of Prussia and was deeded over to Germany in 1806 and is now part of modern day Germany.)

Jacob Siefert, 1635 – 1718, born in Switzerland or Swabia ----second generation

Joachim Jacob Siefert, 1690 – 1760, born in Switzerland or Swabia, died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania ----third generation
Wife not identified

Jurg Ludwig Siefert, 9/05/1736 – 9/18/1789 probably born in Swabia (became part of Germany in 1806), but died in Rowan Co., N. C.
Johann Leonard Siefert, 3/11/1743 - 1806 born in Odenwald, (in the Beerfelden area) Germany, died in Lincoln, N. C., married Ann or Catherine Ann Eddleman.  In Jurg Ludwig’s will, he received at least 400 acres of land, and other specific items.
Elizabeth Siefert, married a Rhus or (Reece or Reese).  In Jurg Ludwig’s will, she received 100 acres of land.
Johann Christian Siefert, married royalty, the daughter of the Duke of Erbach (Sovereignty of Germany) (this son is not confirmed but probable) Mary (name stated in her brother, Jurg’s, will.) In Jurg Ludwig’s will, she received 190 acres of land, and other specific items.

Other children not identified

Jacob Seifert is listed on the Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s -1900s, the year is 1735-1755 in Pennsylvania.  This could have been Joachim Jacob Siefert who was born in Switzerland or Swabia and died in Philadelphia, Penn. in 1760.  According to the Church of the Latter Day Saints, Family History Center in Philadelphia, Penn., Joachim Siefert from Finkenbach and his wife Eve Elizabeth Edelmann and their ten children came to the United States on a ship “Two Brothers” on Sept. 28, 1753 into the harbor of Philadelphia, Penn.

Joachim or Johann Christian Siefert, born in Switzerland or Swabia, a probable son of Joachim Jacob Siefert.  He was a missionary and in 1739, he was found to be the first pastor of Christiansted Lutheran Church on the island of St. Croix in the U. S. Virgin Islands.  He had married royalty, the daughter of the Duke of Erbach, a sovereignty of modern day Germany, although he was a commoner.  After leaving the Bahamas, he settled in Virginia.  He owned about 10,000 acres in Pulaski Co., Virginia (northwest corner of the state).  This is in the Belspring Area and there is a mountain named after the family called Sifford Mountain.  He then migrated to Pennsylvania and then to North Carolina.

Jurg Ludwig Sievers/Siefert was a communicant at a Lutheran/Reformed Union Meeting House at Dillingersville, Penn., from 1756 to 1767.  He moved to North Carolina between 1768 and 1770.  Sometime in the mid 1770s he sold his property in Penn. to Hans Schantz, but he apparently had purchased property in N. C. prior to that time.  C.A.G. Storch, early Rowan Lutheran pastor, records his grave service at Organ Church in his diary as 9/19/1789.

The 1790 United States Federal Census shows a Jacob Syfert on Water Street East Side in Philadelphia, Penn.  Jacob had living in the house with him, 1 free white male age 16 or older, 1 free white male under age 16 and 4 free white females (including heads of families).  No slaves were listed.  The relationship to the Sifford family is uncertain.

Jurg Ludwig Sievers (Sifford) or Siefert, 9/5/1736 – 9/18/1789, born in Swabia or Pennsylvania, buried at Organ Church in Rowan Co., N. C., the first Sifford to go to North Carolina from Pennsylvania, married to:

Elizabeth (No. 1), probably Edelmann/Eddleman, in 1761 in Pennsylvania

Catherina Siffert, born 6/13/1762, baptized 6/27/1762 at St/ Paul’s Lutheran Church, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania
George Lewis Siffert, Jr., 9/19/1766 – 9/1813 in Rowan Co., N. C., born in Penn. and baptized 10/26/1766, at the Union Meeting House in Dillingersville, Pennsylvania  (his will was probated in 1813 in Rowan County, N. C.)
John Peter Siffert, born around 1768 in Pennsylvania, died 7/1815 in Rowan Co., N. C., (Buried at Zion “Organ” Lutheran Church, but no marker found.) married on 11/22/1797 to Susan Coon in Rowan Co., N. C. She was the daughter of Antony Coons of East Rowan, N. C. Leonard Cluttz, bondsman; Jno Rogers, wit.  In his father’s will, he received 200 acres of land, the NW corner of which is the site of Organ Church, as well as other specific items.
Christena (Christian) Siffert, born 10/26/1770, in N. C., and died in Rowan Co., N. C., married on 9/04/1801 to Michael Troutman in Rowan Co., N. C.; George Genz, bondsman; Jno Brem, wit.

(Elizabeth, the wife and mother, probably died in Christena’s childbirth or soon thereafter)

Jurg Ludwig Sievers (Sifford) or Siefert married to:

Elizabeth (No. 2), 3/31/1754 – 4/3/1829, buried at Organ Church, Rowan Co., N. C.

Abraham Siffert, born around 1773, died in the 1860s in Mo., married Margaret Lentz on 4/9/1798. She was the daughter of Bastian Lentz, Jr.  In his father’s will, he received 200 acres of land and the requirement of caring for his mother the rest of her life, as well as other specific items.
Eva Siffert, 1775 or 1776 – 1843 born in Rowan Co., N. C., died in Cabarrus Co., N. C. She married Leonard Kluttz on 10/6/1791.  In her father’s will she received 50 pounds of gold, as well as other specified items.
Mary Elizabeth Siffert, born around 1778 – 1779 in Rowan Co., N. C. She married John Fisher. This was his second marriage.                  Hannah Elizabeth Siffert, 3/7/1781 – 3/8/1850 married John Kluttz.  (Buried in the Grace United Church of Christ “Lowerstone German Reformed Church” cemetery, in Rowan Co., N. C.)

According to “Rowan County (N. C.) Records: Early Settlers” by Eugene H. Bean the following Siffords were identified as early settlers and land owners previous to 1800:  Gaorge, 1792; Ludwig, 1785; Lewis, 1777; Leonard, 1790; and Jacob, 1790.  Also, Seffert, Frederick, 1785; Henry, 1764.

The Union School and Church in Dillingersville, Montgomery Co., Penn., was established in 1735.  The site of the original school now has a stone sign that names the school and church.  The original school had been rebuilt and the present structure has been preserved from the 1800s as an historical landmark.  Dillingersville, Penn. is located about 40 miles NW of Philadelphia, Penn.  It is in a very rural farm area with very little of anything around it.  There is still a St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, but it split and moved and the church that is on the original site of St. Paul’s is called New Goshenhoppen United Church of Christ.  It has a large cemetery that has many graves dating back to the 1700s.  The church has been rebuilt three times.

In the “Official Church Records of Organ Lutheran Church, 1774-1882 (Translated from German) Cemetery Records from 1774-1848”, it is stated that “the following members of our congregation began to build the so-called Organ Church, namely: George Ludwig Siffert” – first name given along with 20 other names, including his brother, Leonhard Siffert.  The constitution was introduced to the church 12/31/1789.  The 9th item, “We deacons obligate ourselves to pay our pastor’s salary accurately every six months”, listed Ludwig Siffert as the 2nd deacon on the named, along with 43 others, including his brother, Leonhard Siffert.

In “Rowan County, N. C. Vacant Land Entries, 1778-1789” it was noted on 11 Mar 1778  “#592 Ludwick Sifford 300 A. on waters of Dutch Buffelow (Crk) adj county line, Phillip Yeost, & John Benfield’s & George Leagle’s conditional line, including the Improovment he bought of Jacob Yeost.”

In August of 1786, Jurg Ludwig Sievers deeded ten acres of his 701 acres “to the elders of Zion congregation (now Organ) including the meeting house, school house, and other bldgs” for five pounds.  He did not live to see the church completed in 1794.  The church cemetery is also on the ten acres.

Jurg Ludwig Siefert, Sr.’s will is in Will Bk D in Rowan Co. N. C. and was written in 1789 and probated in 1799.  The will is four pages written in German.  The translation indicated that he was to have a Christian burial and concerning his worldly goods he felt blessed by God.  He distributed his estate in the following way:  His wife, Elizabeth, would get the bed and bedstead, the chest, 4 cows and calves, 2 steer of the 2 yr. olds, 8 sheep, 8 pigs, her own spinning wheel, pots, bowls, spoons, plates and the kettle for her property as long as she remains a widow and 200 acres of land until the son, Abraham, would come of age.  Then he must provide for his mother as long as she lives with food, drink and clothes – and he didn’t want this to be difficult for his children and he wanted them to get along well with each other.  Then his son, Abraham, would get the place where he lived, 200 acres of land, the wagon, the blanket, all the harnesses and things for 2 horses and whips or straps, 1 plow with all that goes with it, 3 horses, the brown, the pale and another for his property, but he had to pay his sister, Eva, 50 pounds of gold as he could, and another daughter also 50 pounds of gold, but first to Eva.  And his son, Johann Peter, would get 200 acres of land for his property, but divided into 2 equal parts and what is left went to his brother, Leonard Schafer, 400 acres of land for his property and if he paid 50 pounds to the Executors he would have another 400 acres, but if he couldn’t, then the 400 acres of land had to be sold and use the gold to pay any debts, and his sister, Elizabeth, would get 100 acres of land for her property.  Then he ordered his Executors to give each 100 or 400 acres of land.  The he would give his sister, Mary, 190 acres of land for her own, the black cow with the calf and everything that he was owed from someone and 4 sheep, 6 pigs, 2 pots, a new spinning wheel, that the Executors had to buy, the small table from the house for her own, and to Eva, his daughter, a white cow and calf, 4 yr. old cow and calf, 4 sheep, 4 pigs, her bed and bedstead, her clothes, spinning wheel and pots must be purchased for her by the Executors.  He appointed his faithful friend, Georg Heinrich (Beurger or Berger) and his wife, Elizabeth, as guardian or Executors, and this was all done on May 9th, 1789.  He then added his carpentry tools, naming each one of them, to his 2 boys for their own.  The witnesses were John Rintelman, Elisabeth Seiffert and Heinrich ____.  The he added: his dear daughter, Eva, would get a 2 yr. old brown horse for her property and his dear sons, Abraham and Peter, would get the plows and what belongs to them as their property.  He apparently used the same witnesses for the addition.  Both the original and the addition were signed and sealed by Georg Ludwig Seiffert.

Catherine Siffert/Sifford 10/12/1791 – 9/19/1839 born in Rowan Co., N. C. and died in Union Co., IL., married George Hileman on 9/12/1814 in Rowan Co., N. C.  Catherine was the daughter of William Siffert, mother unknown.  William Siffert/Sifford was the named Executor of the will of George Lewis Sifford, Jr. of Rowan Co. N. C., and he may have been his cousin and George Lewis Sifford, Jr. was Peter Sifford’s father.  George Hileman, son of Jacob Hileman and wife of Catherine, was a named brother of Christian Hileman in their father, Jacob’s will.  Christian’s son, Jacob, married a daughter of Peter Sifford, Tena L. Sifford.  However the relationship of Catherine Siffert/Sifford to Peter Sifford is uncertain at this time.

George Lewis Siffert, Jr., married in Rowan Co., N. C., in 10/1791 to:

Christianna (Johstin), 10/1/1771 – 7/23/1856

George Lewis Siffert, Jr.’s will is in Will Bk G in Rowan Co. N. C., and was written 9/19/1813 and probated in 1813.  In the will, he gave his wife Christianna full possession of his plantation and other property “so long as She remains my Widow, but if she marry again I will that She Shall have no more than an equal child part with my children, so that She my wife Shall have one Equal child part of all my property and possessions”.  To his children he gave them the “privilege to go to Trades of their own choice at Eighteen years of age”.  William Sifford was the Executor.  (The relationship of William to George Lewis, Jr., is not known at this time.)

(The above information was obtained from Harry T. Sifford of Granite Quarry, N. C. and his earlier research on the Siffords, from Census documents, “Marriages of Rowan Co., N. C. 1753-1868”, Will Book G in Rowan Co. N. C., “Official Church Records of Organ Lutheran Church 1774-1882 (Translated from German) Cemetery Records from 1774-1848”, Church of Latter Day Saints Family History Center, Philadelphia, Penn. and other cross references from historical data and other verified documents.)

(1810 Census of Rowan Co., N. C. – 3rd U.S. Census)

George Siford, 9/19/1766 – 9/1813 (George Lewis Sifford, Jr.)

2 – free white males (Age under 10)

            3 – free white males (Age 10 – 15)

            1 – free white male (Age 26 – 44)

3 – free white females (Age under 10)

            1 – free white female (Age 26 – 44)

John Peter Sifford was about age 14 at the time of this census, still living at home.

George Sifford fought in the War of 1812 and is listed as #6 in the Sixth Company detached from the Eleventh Brigade.  This was taken from “MUSTER ROLLS OF THE SOLDIERS OF THE WAR OF 1812: DETACHED FROM THE MILITIA OF NORTH CAROLINA, IN 1812 AND 1814, PUBLISHED IN PURSUANCE OF THE RESOLUTIONS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF JANUARY 28, 1851, UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE ADJUTANT GENERAL” p 69.  (Probably this George Sifford was either the son of George Jr., John George Siffert, who was born in 1793 and would have been about the age of 19 or George Lewis Sifford, Jr. who was born in 1766 and would have been about the age of 46.  Both could have been fighting age.  If it was George Jr., he died the next year, in 1813 at about the age of 47.  It is unknown at this time if he died in the war or if he died of natural causes.)

(1820 Census of Union Co., IL. – 4th U.S. Census)

It is noted that in Chapter III “Land Patentees and 1846 Land Owners, Union County, Illinois” there is a reference in 1819 to John Vancil’s “Cabin at the foot of the long ridge”…  This is believed to be the log cabin and property that Peter Sifford bought from John and Nancy Vancil in 1825.  It is not known where Peter and his family lived in Union County prior to 1825.

It is noted that in Chapter I “Commissioners’ Court Proceedings, Union County, Illinois, 1818-1826” Peter Sifford is named on page 121, Tuesday, March 4, 1823 related to working on the county roads for a newly appointed supervisor.  Peter is also mentioned on page 163, Monday, Sept. 6, 1824 again related to working on the county roads for a newly appointed supervisor.

The 1820 Census of Union County, IL., indicated that Peter Sifford was engaged in agriculture.  Peter’s wife, Leah, was apparently around the age of 16 at the time of their marriage, since the only female listed is age range 10 – 16, and Leah was born in 1804, and they had been married in Feb. of 1820.

Also noted in the census: 1 person over 18 and under 45 subject to military duty.        Also listed "free males of color, free females of color, French Negroes and Mulattoes held in bondage, indentured / registered servants and their children" but none noted.

It should be noted that Christian Hileman married Nancy Davis 3/06/1823 (Bk A-10) in Union County, IL.  They are the parents of Jacob Hileman, who married Tena Lavina Sifford, and Alexander Trees married Katherine Hartline 9/18/1825 (Bk A-20) in Union County, IL.  They are the parents of Henry Trees, who married Lucinda Sifford, and Maston Trees, who married Sarah Jane Sifford.  Christian and Nancy Hileman, and Alexander and Katherine Trees, as well as Peter and Leah Sifford were all early marriages recorded in the first marriage book of Union County, IL. Book A.

One of the boys must have been Silas Sifford since he was born in 1827 and therefore would have been under 10 years old.  On Silas Sifford's marriage license to Mary Elizabeth Goodman Oglesby or Oglesbey, he listed Peter and Leah (Mull) Sifford as his parents.

There were 3 Sifford girls that married in the 1840s. They were daughters of Peter and Leah Sifford.  John Jackson Lence married Elizabeth Sifford on 9/6/1842 (Bk 1-134).  Jacob Hileman married Tena Lavina Sifford on 2/15/1846 (Bk 1-185).  Isaac J. Sitter married Anna Sifford on 1/9/1848 (Bk 1-216).  (“HISTORY OF ALEXANDER, UNION AND PULASKI COUNTIES, ILLINOIS” by Perrin in 1883, p 364, as well as marriage records in the Union County Courthouse, Jonesboro, IL.)

In 1839 Peter Sifford was on the Union County tax list as having 3 horses, 15 cows, 1 wagon or cart, 1 clock or watch and other personal property with a total value of $550.  His land was worth $4 an acre and he still had only the original eighty acres that he purchased from John and Nancy Vancil off of Vines Road in 1825.  But by 1849 he added an additional eighty acres to that original eighty-acre site and had also acquired one hundred twenty acres south of and along what is now Wright’s Crossing Road, a little east of the railroad and between there and Poplar Street / Bell Hill Road, giving Peter a total of 240 acres.  In 1846 land was valued at $3 per acre, giving him a total value of real estate of $720, and $125 worth of horses, $65 worth of cattle, $10 worth of clocks, $30 worth of wagons, $50 worth of stock and $125 worth of other property not enumerated with a $405 total value of personal property.  Of note, his state real estate tax in 1846 was $5.40 and his county tax was $1.44.  His personal property state tax was $3.03 and his county tax was $0.81.  He paid all of his taxes.  By his death in 1853 he had acquired an additional forty acres off of Vines Road.  (The personal land information is based on the 1839 and 1846 tax lists and the 1846 taxable assessed property list and land records of Union County, IL., as well as the probate record of Peter Sifford, 1/30/1853.)

(1850 and 1860 Census of Union Co., IL.)

The 1850 Federal Census listed Peter Sifford and Leah living in Dist. 2, Union Co., IL., with 7 of their children.  Neither Peter nor Leah Sifford could read or write.  Their neighbors on the census were several Lence families and a Mull family.  Peter was a farmer and had real estate valued at $480.

Jackson and Daniel Sifford were listed in "1862 military census", men 18 to 45 years old and able to serve in the Union Army during the Civil War.  Also listed were Jacob Hileman, Henry Treese, Isaac Sitter, A.L. Sitter and Maston Treese, sons-in-law of Peter and Leah Sifford.

On 8/01/1825 Peter Sifford purchased 80 acres that included a log cabin off Vines Rd. in Union County, IL. (E ½ NE ¼ Sect 32, Twnshp 11S R 1W) that had been owned and built by John and Nancy Vancil in 1818. (The land had been purchased by John Vancil on 8/14/1818 at $2.00 an acre for a total of $160.00.) The cabin still stands and has been owned by only five families: Vancil, Sifford, Sitter, Fishback and VanOosting, the current owner who purchased the cabin in 1982.  The original cabin did not have a separate kitchen, but the first add-on kitchen had been a lean-to style and may have been both a summer and winter kitchen.  That kitchen was destroyed by fire and a kitchen was built in the 1960s by Fishback to replace the one destroyed using the original foundation “footprint”.  A “courting parlor” was added at some time – probably because the Siffords had eight girls!  The living room had been divided in half – one side being the half and upstairs, and the other side being the half and “courting parlor”.  There were two front doors, but the lean-to kitchen was shared.  Apparently more than one family (probably some of the married children) lived in the cabin at one time, thus requiring the divisions.  The original 1818 logs in the living room and the upstairs bedroom have been painstakingly scrubbed and preserved.  The chinking was painted white to brighten the house.  Several rooms have been added to the side and upstairs, leaving the front 1818 log wall and one side 1818 log wall of the living room and upstairs bedroom still exposed.  The 1818 log wall that separates the living room from the kitchen has also been well preserved.  There is also a barn on the property dating back to about 1818.  It was partially collapsed and the current owner has erected a protective shell around the structure and is continuing to restore it to the original condition – “a work in progress!”  Several pieces of farm equipment were found under the collapsed wings of the barn, but the exact age of these horse-drawn items have not been determined at this time.  (Union County Courthouse land records and other documents and the real estate abstract verified the purchase of the cabin and property.  The current owner, Van Oosting, relayed the particular information regarding the cabin and living arrangements and the barn.)

Peter Sifford died “on or about the 30th day of January A.D. 1853”.  His son-in-law Jacob Hileman was named as administrator of the estate.  This is the final settlement after all bills and obligations were paid:  Leah Sifford, widow, sum of $80.95, Silas Sifford, sum of $14.72, Isaac J. Sitter in right of his wife, Anna, sum of $14.72, Lucinda Sifford, sum of $14.72, Daniel Sifford, sum of $14.72, Jackson Sifford, sum of $14.72, Leah Sifford, sum of $14.72, Sarah Sifford, sum of $14.72, Louisa Sifford, sum of $14.72, and (Hannah) Clarrisa Sifford, sum of $14.72.  It was also noted in the probate records that the widow, Leah Sifford, received specific property worth $466.60.  (Probate Book 5 page 354 and Probate Journal A, pages 331-332 Union County Courthouse, Jonesboro, IL., as well as “Union County, Illinois, Probate Records 1818-1855” page 192.)

By the 1860 Census Leah Sifford, with Hannah (Clarrisa), Louisa and Daniel Sifford were living with a son-in-law and daughter and granddaughter, Maston and Sarah Trees and 6 mo. old Lucinda, in the area of South Pass, IL.  It is not certain if that was in the Sifford log cabin or not.  Sometimes there has been more than one family living in the cabin.

Watson or William W. (born 1869 or 70 – 1870)

Christian Hileman, b. 1797, Jacob’s father, came to Union County, IL., from N. C. in 1819, as did Peter Sifford.  In 1823, he married and settled in Anna Precinct, near where the Southern Illinois Insane Asylum now stands.  The Illinois State Archives Public Domain Land Sales Database shows Christian Hileman purchased 80 acres of land W2NW Sect. 21 Twnshp 12 S R 1 W in Union County for $100.00 (80 acres at $1.25 per acre) on 6/07/1839.  He owned a total of about 500 acres and was a farmer.  Christian’s wife, Nancy (Davis) Hileman, b. 1805, came with her family to Union Co., IL., in 1817, and her father was the first tailor in Union Co, having his shop on his farm.  (“HISTORY OF ALEXANDER, UNION AND PULASKI COUNTIES, ILLINOIS.” by Perrin 1883, p 71 - 72)

The Illinois State Archives Public Domain Land Sales Database shows Jacob Hileman purchased 40 acres of land NENE Sect. 20 Twnshp 12 S R 1 W in Union County for $50.00 (40 acres at $1.25 per acre) on 9 /11/1848.

The 1846 Tax List of Union County, Illinois listed Jacob Hileman as owning property in “District 2” Twnshp 12 S R 1 W: W ½ NW ¼ Sec. 21, 80 acres valued at $3 an acre, total of $240, state tax $1.80, county tax $0.48, paid.  Also, $45 worth of horses, $10 worth of cattle and $50 worth of other property not enumerated, with a total value of $105.  His state tax was $0.78 and his county tax was $0.21, both were paid.  The 1850 Federal Census shows that Jacob Hileman was married, had two children and was a farmer with real estate value of $370.

The name Jacob Hileman appears 3 times in the “Union County, Illinois, 1862 Military Census”.  It is uncertain if any of them represent this same Jacob Hileman.  The ILLINOIS CIVIL WAR DETAIL REPORT does not show any Jacob Hileman that would have been the age of the Jacob Hileman who married Tena Lavina Sifford, as fighting in the Civil War.

In 1865 the Tax List of Union County, IL., listed Jacob Hileman of Anna, “Article or Occupation” Sorghum Syrup, “No. in Abstract” 89, “Valuation” 1040, “Rate of Tax” 5, “Amount of Tax Upon Particular Article” and “Total” 52.00.

Jacob Hileman was one of nine children.  He was a farmer and had about 120 acres of land in the Anna Precinct.  “He erected, in 1870, a handsome brick residence, which he has well and elegantly furnished.”  The brick home still stands at the intersection of Hwy. 146 E. and Hwy. 51 S. at the east edge of Anna.  Both Mr. and Mrs. Hileman were members of the Reformed Church, and Jacob was an Elder of the church.  He was also a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge at Anna and a “Democrat, and, though not an office seeker, was Sheriff of Union County from 1870 to 1874.”  (“HISTORY OF ALEXANDER, UNION AND PULASKI COUNTIES, ILLINOIS” by Perrin in 1883, p 71 – 72, and verified with other historical data, land and census documents.)  The 1870 Federal Census of Anna, Union County, IL, records Jacob Hileman having real estate valued at $8,000 and personal estate valued at $2,000.  He and his wife and 8 of their children were living somewhere in the area of the Isaac J. Sitter family – listed on the same census page.  There was also a male age 21, Luther Robertson, born in N.C. living in the same house, but unknown relationship to the family.  The 1880 Federal Census shows Jacob and his family still in Anna, Union Co., IL., with 4 of their single children.  He is still a farmer and 2 of his sons are also farmers.

Jacob Hileman married on 2/21/1894 in Anna, IL., Mrs. Sarah A. (Phillips) Finch (Bk 8-151) with Rev. W. B. Minton, Minister of United Presb. Church, officiating.  The groom was a farmer in Anna, IL., age 71 and the bride was age 60, either divorced or widowed, and living in Anna, IL.  She was the daughter of John and Leanah (Tippy) Phillips and born in Belville, IL.  The witnesses were J. M. Faris and John Howell.  This was the second marriage for both of them.

The 1900 Federal Census shows Jacob Hilemanage 77, as living in Anna, IL., married to his second wife, Sarah A. Hileman, age 66 (they married in 1894 - his first wife, Tena Lavina [Sifford] Hileman died in 1892) and having a boarder living with them.

IL., Thomas and __ (Brooks) Trulove, with Eld. E. D. Jones, a Minister of Christ, officiating.  The witness was H. C. Sitter.  The groom was 25 and the bride was 21, the first marriage for both.

Anna (Sifford) Sitter’s tombstone reads:  “Born Nov. 15, 1829.  Married to Isaac J. Sitter, Jan, 9, 1848, Gave birth to 11 Children: 9 Boys, 2 Girls, the last but 6 weeks old when its Mother died, Nov. 2, 1870, Aged 40 Yrs. 11 Mos. & 17 Days.”

Peter Adolphus and Emma (St. John) Sitter had seven boys.  One of them, Isaac Roy, was the father of Pearl M. (Sitter) Adams and Truman A. Sitter, both still living in Cobden in the 1900s.

Conrod Sitter, father of Isaac J. and Abraham L. Sitter, half brothers, also came to Union Co., IL., in 1819, as did Peter Sifford, died 9/10/1845 (Union Co. IL. Probate Records) and is buried in the Casper Cemetery.  In the 1839 Tax List of Union County, IL., Conrod Sitter had “8 horses worth $260, 22 cows worth $133, 1 clock or watch worth $5, money loaned $70, value of other personal property $225; total value of taxable personal property $693.  Land: NE ¼ Section 8, township 12 S R 1 W, 160 acres worth $4 an acre, $640.”  When Conrod Sitter died in 1845, Union County Illinois Probate Records – 1818-1845, page 83 indicated that his widow received $356.02, and each child or their heir received $50.85 (this included Isaac and Abraham Sitter).

Isaac Sitter’s father, Conrod Sitter, was listed in “Union County, Illinois, Militia Officers, 1819-1846 as an “ensign, 20 Oct 1824.  He came to Union County in 1819.  Died 10 Sep 1845.”

In the 1846 Tax List of Union County, Illinois, Isaac Sitter is listed as having $75 worth of horses and $16 worth of other property not enumerated, with a total value of $91.  His state tax was $0.68 and his county tax was $0.18, and both were paid.

The 1850 Census shows Isaac Sitter, his wife Anna, 5 mo. old son, Henry and a 7 yr. old girl Sarah Lentel living in “District 2” of Union County, IL.  Some of his neighbors were the Mangold, the Christian Hileman and the Henry Trees families.  He is farming and has $371 worth of real estate owned.

It should be noted that Isaac Sitter was a soldier in the American Civil War.  He was listed in the “Union County, Illinois, 1862 Military Census”.  He enlisted as a Private on the side of the Union for the State of Illinois on 15 August 1862 from Jonesboro, IL by CPT McIntosh; mustered in on 11 Sep 1862 from Camp Anna, IL, to Comp. F  109 Illinois Infantry.  He was from “Union Co, IL, age 39, height 5’11, hair dark, eyes grey, complexion fair, married, occupation wagon maker, nativity Johnson Co, IL.”  (The ILLINOIS CIVIL WAR DETAIL REPORT and the American Civil War Soldiers database.)

The 1865 Tax List showed Isaac Sitter of Anna with “Stallion”, no number listed, and a $10 tax total.  The 1866 Tax List showed Isaac Sitter of Anna with 1 Stallion and 1 Jack and a $20 tax total.

After the death of Anna (Sifford) Sitter in 1869, Isaac J. Sitter married Alice Hartline, his housekeeper, on 9/05/1872 (planned wedding day as stated in the last will and testament of Isaac) (they married in St. Louis, Mo. and are listed in “Missouri Marriage Records, 1805 – 2002) and they had a least one son, George, born ~ 1873 (his name was on the 1880 Federal Census, age 7) and one daughter, Mary. George was still single in 1894. (The information on Alice and the two children is from “South Pass Revisited, A 150 YEAR HISTORY of COBDEN, ILLINOIS” page 220)  The abstract of the land owned by Isaac J. Sitter verifies that at the time of his death, Alice Sitter was his widow.  Alice is also named in his last will and testament.

According to the 1870 Census of Anna, Union County, IL., also living in the house were housekeepers Tayer (Layer) Sifford (Age 60) born in N.C., and Louisa Sifford (Age 20) born in IL.  I believe this is Leah Sifford, the widow of Peter Sifford, (the name on their marriage license appears to be Leyah, which would be similar) who would have been closer to 65 than 60, but was born in N. C., and her daughter, Louisa, was 20 and born in IL., as the census indicated.  Leah was probably helping her (as yet) unmarried widowed son-in-law with the children after the death of her daughter, Anna.  The 1870 Census also showed Isaac Sitter as having $2,500 worth of real estate and $25,000 worth of personal estate.  He probably was already in the business at “Sitter Cross Roads” in Sect. 8 Twnshp 12 S R 1 E, where he had a store as well as his residence, although the census listed him as a farmer.

A Warranty Deed dated 6/10/1875 shows Isaac J. Sitter buying Lot No. 26 in Winstead Davies first Addition to the town of Anna, IL., from William and Electa Morgan of Red Bud, IL., for $1,000.

The 1880 Federal Census shows Isaac and his second wife, Alice, living in the Stokes Precinct, Union Co., IL., with 9 children.  He is still listed as a farmer.

In “AN ATLAS OF UNION COUNTY, ILLINOIS, 1881” by D. J. Lake and Co., in the Mount Pleasant Business References, Isaac J. Sitter, was listed as: ”Dealer in Dry Goods, groceries, Hats, Caps, Boots, Shoes, Hardware, Queensware, and all kinds of goods kept in a first class country store; also Dealer in all kinds of Live Stock.  Store and Residence at Sitter’s Cross Roads, Sec. 8.”  The Atlas also verifies that Isaac J. Sitter had at least 300 acres of land in Section 8 Township 12 South Range 1 East of Union County, IL.  An abstract from the current owner of the land also shows that John Murphy and Lotta Murphy, His Wife, sold by Warranty Deed to Isaac J. Sitter for $5,000.00 on 1/22/1879 260 acres of land.  It also shows that Lafayette Murphy and Malissa C. Murphy, His Wife, sold by Warranty Deed to Isaac J. Sitter for $190.00 on 8/22/1879 40 acres of land, giving him a total of 300 acres.  It also shows that Isaac J. Sitter and Allice Sitter, His (2nd) Wife mortgaged the property to John Murphy for $4,000.00 to be paid April 1 of 1880, 1881, 1882, and 1883, in 4 equal payments of $1,000.00 without interest.  On 2/4/1885 the 260 acres were mortgaged to Jacob Rendleman for $2,000.00 to be paid in 12 months with “8% interest per annum until paid”.  The abstract then showed on 3/1/1894 the heirs of Isaac J. Sitter sold 260 acres to Riley R. Hindman.  Riley was married to a niece of Isaac’s, Cynthia (Sitter) Hindman, who was the daughter of Solomon Sitter.  The disposition of any other property is uncertain.

Isaac J. Sitter died 3/29/1892.  According to his last will and testament (Will Record 2 pages 120-127, Union Co., IL.) written 9/04/1872 at age 51 years, and after all expenses and just debts were paid, each of his 10 children were to receive 1/10th of all his property personal or real at the time of his death.  The one exception being the death of one of the children and then the other surviving children would equally divide that portion among those surviving.  If Alice Hartline became his wife on 9/05/1872 she would receive $2,000.00 out of his estate provided she stayed his wife and continued to live with Isaac as such until the day of his death, but if she married him and did not live with him as his wife until the day of his death she would only receive $1,000.00 out of his estate, and all the rest residue and remainder of the estate real and personal would be given to any blood children previously mentioned, or their heirs to be divided equally between them.  His son, Christopher Jerome Sitter was appointed Executor.  (The abstract of the land owned by Isaac J. Sitter verifies that at the time of death, Alice was his widow.)

(1850,1860,1870, 1880 and 1900 Census of Cobden and Casper Precinct, Union Co., IL.)

Silas Sifford 5/24/1827 - 7/3/1904 (dates from family Bible) (Buried in Cobden Cem. according to death certificate but no cemetery record or marker found.) He married on 9/7/1848 (Bk 1-225) in Cobden IL., with W. G. Nimmo, a Justice of the Peace, officiating, to:

Melvina or Anna M. or Amanda (~1849 or 1850) married James T. Hardin on 3/19/1871 (Bk 3–86) with James F. F. Wallace, a Justice of the Peace, officiating.   (1850 called Melvina, 1860 called Anna, 1870 called Amanda, but marriage license listed as Anna M. Sifford)
Tena L. or T. Lucy 5/16/1851 - 10/19/1880 (Buried in the Cobden Cem., Blk.3, Lot 24, No.3) married James Davis on 10/24/1878 (Bk 5–50), at the home of Silas Sifford, with J. F. F. Wallace, a Justice of the Peace, officiating.  The bride was age 26, from Cobden, IL, born in Union County, IL, 1st marriage.  The groom was age 21, a farmer from Anna, IL., born in Union County, IL., son of Levi and ___ (Casper) Davis, 1st marriage.  The witnesses were S. G. Clay and P. H. Fellows.
Thomas (~1853) only on the 1860 Census at age 7, but there is a child listed on the 1870 Census that could be Thomas (difficult to read), but it was read as L. Laura, age 18 and male.
James (~1855) only on the 1860 Census age 5
Francis (~1858) only on the 1860 Census age 2
John F. 9 or 10/23/1863 - 1/15/1943 (Buried in the Cobden Cem., Blk.3, Lot 24, No. 4) a farmer, married Mary A. Ford on 2/25/1890 (Bk 6-484) at Jonesboro, IL., with Dewitt C. Dougherty, a Justice of the Peace, officiating.  The witnesses were Joseph Price and Sanil D. Hurst.  The bride was 17 and born in Perry Co., IL., the groom was 26 and born in Union Co., IL.  She was the daughter of Frank and Nancy [Sanders] Ford.  They divorced on 6/18/1894 (Chancery Bk U pp 186 – 187); she charged him with desertion.  Her name was restored to Mary A. Ford.  No children were listed.  John died from “Hypo-tension With head Disease”.  (He was found outside the house by neighbors and carried into his house where he died soon after.)  Dr. Tweedy signed the death certificate.  (Arthur F. Goodman, a nephew, was the Administrator of John’s estate.)
Lucia L. 8/14/1867 - 5/31/1911 (Buried in the Cobden Cem., Blk. 3, Lot 74, No. 2) born in Cobden, IL., (birth date based on family Bible), married Andrew Jackson Goodman on 5/29/1884 (Bk 6–210) in Jonesboro, IL., at age 16, having written permission from her father Silas Sifford, with D. C. Dougherty, Police Magistrate, officiating. (Lucy was not on the 1870 Census, unless she was the name that was very difficult to read and listed as a male age 18 – maybe it should have been a female age 18 months – the name could have been read as L. Lucia or something similar.  She was on the 1880 Census as Lucy age 12.)  The groom was a farmer, age 24, born in Jonesboro, IL., the son of Thomas and Nancy (Bickerstine) Goodman.  This was the groom’s second marriage.  The witness was Amy W. Wilson.

The 1850 Federal Census showed Silas Sifford and his wife and their daughter age 9 months, living in Dist. 2, Union Co., IL.  He was a farmer and some of his neighbors were the Vancil, Lence, Mull, Dillow and Rich families.  The census also showed that Elizabeth Sifford could not read or write.  In 1851 Peter and Leah Sifford deeded to Silas Sifford, their son, 120 acres in Sects. 20 and 29, Twnshp 11 S R 1 W, north of Cobden, IL.  In 1857 Silas Sifford purchased from Mr. and Mrs. Allen Bambridge, for $100.00 part of NE ¼ NE ¼ Sect. 29 Twnshp 11 S R 1 W in Union Co., IL., consisting of 22 acres.  In 1859 Silas Sifford purchased from Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Ashley and Mr. and Mrs. David Phillips, for $47.50 Lot numbered 10 in Block F in the Town of South Pass, IL.  The 1860 Federal Census of Twnshp 11 S R 1 W, Union County, IL., showed Jackson Sifford, his brother, with real estate valued at $1,000 and personal estate valued at $300, listed next to Silas, who had real estate valued at $4,000 and personal estate valued at $1,000, both apparently along Wright’s Crossing Road north of Cobden, IL.  In 1865 John Powell and Silas Sifford bought from Mr. and Mrs. Spencer Sammons, for $700.00 NE ¼ SE ¼ Sect. 20 Twnshp 11 S R 1 W in Union Co., IL., consisting of 40 acres.  In 1866 Silas Sifford bought from Mr. and Mrs. James Powell, for $624.00 NE ¼   NE ¼ Sect. 12 Twnshp 12 S R 1 W in Union Co., IL., consisting of 40 acres (Saratoga area).  Also in 1866 Silas and Elizabeth Sifford sold 10 acres from Sect. 29 Twnshp 11 S R 1 W in Union Co., IL., to Philip H. Fellows for $1,000.  Also in 1866 Silas Sifford bought from the Illinois Central Railroad Company for $600.00 SE ¼  SE ¼  Sect. 20 Twnshp 11 S R 1 W in Union Co., IL., consisting of 40 acres.  Also in 1866 Silas and Elizabeth Sifford sold 20 acres from Sect. 20 and 29 Twnshp 11 S R 1 W in Union Co., IL., to John Clay for $380.  By the 1870 Federal Census Silas and his family were living in the Casper Precinct, Union Co., IL., and the Tate family was a neighbor.  He was still farming and his property was valued at $6,000 and personal estate valued at $600. (The Census also showed a Jasper Miles, unidentified, living with Silas and his family.)  But by 1881 Silas only owned 91.09 acres in Sects. 20 and 29, Twnshp 11 S R 1 W, along Wright’s Crossing Road where he lived with his family.  (The above land information was verified by the 1881 Plat map of “Town 11 South, Range 1 West of Union County, IL.” and Deed Records and Federal Census documents.)

Silas Sifford bought an 8-plot cemetery lot, Block 003 Lot 024, in the Cobden Cemetery on 8/23/1877 for $20.  His first wife Elizabeth is buried in that Lot, as is their daughter Tena L. (Sifford) Davis and their son, John F. Sifford.

A Warranty Deed dated 2/25/1878 shows Tena L. Sifford selling the North half of Lot No. 2 in Block E in the Village of South Pass to Augustus Koahler for $75.  It is not known how Tena acquired the property.

The 1880 Census of South Pass, Union County, IL., showed that 2 farm laborers lived with Silas and his family, Andrew Goodman age 21 and Jack Day age 17.  Silas’ first wife, Elizabeth, had died and Silas had married his second wife, Mary Elizabeth (Goodman) Oglesby.  Mary had been divorced and was an older sister of the farm laborer, Andrew Goodman, who had also been divorced.  Also living at home was a son, John Sifford age 16 and a daughter, Lucy Sifford age 12.  Lucy would later marry Andrew Goodman with written permission of her father, Silas Sifford.

The 1900 Census of Cobden, Union County, IL., District 95, shows Silas Sifford and his second wife, Mary and his son, John Sifford, age 35 and single (actually John was divorced in 1894), living together and Silas’ mother-in-law, Nancy Goodman, age 67 and a widow, also living with them.  It shows that Mary, Silas’ second wife, had 2 children, but neither were living, and that Nancy Goodman, his wife Mary’s mother, had 6 children and only 5 of them were living.  In the marriage information on Mary Elizabeth Goodman and Thomas Oglesby and on the census pages, there was nothing to indicate that any children had been born to that union, therefore it is thought that Mary and Silas had the 2 children that did not survive.  The Census also showed that Silas owned his farm, but had a mortgage on it.  According to the census, some of Silas’ neighbors were the Tate, Fitch and Andrew Goodman families.  (Nancy Goodman was also the mother of Andrew Goodman.)

Hock, a Justice of the Peace, officiating.  The groom was age 23, a farmer, born in Union Co., IL., the son of Walt and Ernestine Dillow.  This was the first marriage for both.  The witness was Francis Powell.

Abraham L. Sitter was born in 1834 and his father, Conrad, died in 1845 and his mother, Sarah, died in 1847.  In the 1850 Federal Census “Abram” was age 14 and living with his older half-brother, Solomon Sitter and his family.  Abram’s brother, Jacob Sitter, age 9, was also living with Solomon’s family.  In 1855 Abraham and Leah Sitter sold 46 acres of land to his brother, Benjamen W. Sitter, for $100.  The land was in the West side of the SE ¼ Sect. 3 Twnshp 12 S R 1 W and had been part of the estate of his father, Conrad Sitter.  By the 1860 Federal Census, Abram L. Sitter was married to Leah (Sifford) and they had 2 daughters.  He was a farmer and had real estate valued at $300 and personal estate valued at $400.  They lived in Twnshp 11 S R 1 W in Union Co., IL. (The Post Office listed was South Pass.)  It is probable that they were living in the Sifford house on Vines Rd. at that time, because the dates 1862 and 1863 had been burned onto two ceiling beams in the living room of the house and Abraham was in the Civil War from 1862 to 1863.  Also, by the 1860 Federal Census, Peter Sifford’s widow, Leah Sifford, was living with another son-in-law and family with three of her single children.  By the 1870s, according to the abstract of the land Peter Sifford had owned, Abraham had acquired most of that property and ultimately the Sitter family maintained ownership of much of the property until selling the acreage where the Sifford cabin stands in 1962.

Abraham L. Sitter was a soldier in the American Civil War.  He was listed in the “Union County, Illinois, 1862 Military Census”.  He enlisted as a Corporal on the Union side for the State of Illinois, Company C 109 Illinois Infantry.  He joined on Aug 14, 1862 by J M Rich in Union Co, IL; he mustered in on Sep 11, 1862 at Camp Anna, IL.  “Residence South Pass, Union Co. (AGR, UCSD, MDR, 7 Feb 1863 JG).  He was a farmer and fruit grower in Cobden (1860UCC, 1881LA).  Abraham L. Sitter is listed in the Civil War Pension Index: General Index to Pension files, 1861 – 1934.  According to the pension card, he filed for the pension on Jan 17th 1883 and was listed as an Invalid.  (From “Union County, Illinois, Civil War Soldiers and All Soldiers of the 109th IL. Infantry, 1861 – 1865” p 158, the ILLINOIS CIVIL WAR DETAIL REPORT and the Civil War Pension Index.)  It should be noted that James N. Sitter, Abraham L. Sitter’s brother, also fought in the Civil War.  He joined as a PVT, Co. M, 6th Cavalry, on Dec. 1, 1863 at Cairo, IL., by CPT Phillips, mustered in on  5 Dec 1863 at Cairo, IL.  “Residence Jonesboro, Union Co, IL, Age 18, Height 5’5, Hair Brown, Eyes Blue, Complexion Fair, Occupation Farmer, Nativity Union Co, IL.”  “Remarks Died Nov 9, 1864 Huffs Ford, La.”  (ILLINOIS CIVIL WAR DETAIL REPORT)  Died 1 Dec 1864, near Nashville, Tenn. (Union County, Illinois, Probate Records 1856 - 1868).

(It is also noted that a John Sifford was a U.S. Civil War Soldier between 1861-1865.  He is listed as joining as a PVT on the side of the Union, in the 14 Illinois Infantry, Company E.  He joined May 25, 1861 at Jacksonville, IL, by CPT Meade.  He mustered in on May 25, 1861 at Jacksonville, IL.  “Residence Petersburg, Menard Co, IL, Age 26, Height 5’10, Hair Dark, Eyes Black, Complexion Dark, Occupation Stage Driver, Nativity Danville, Northumberland Co, PA.”  “Remarks Reenlisted as Veteran Volunteer.”  He then reenlisted as PVT Company E, 14 Illinois Infantry, on Jan 1, 1864 at Camp Cowan, MS by LT. Mason.  He mustered in on Jan 1, 1864 at Hebron, MS.  “Remarks VETERAN SEE CO “A” VETERAN BATTALION”.  [He was then showing Leroy, McLean Co, IL. as his residence.]  He then transferred to Company A 14/15 Illinois Infantry Veteran Battalion as a PVT.  “Remarks TRANS AS CO A 14 ILL INF AS REVIVED PER SPECIAL FIELD ORDER NO 103 HEADQUARTERS ARMY OF TENN APR 28, 1865”.  [He was showing Taylorville, Christian Co, IL. as his residence.]  He then mustered out at Ft Leavenworth, KS on Sep 16, 1865 by CPT Hubbard.  “Remarks VETERAN STOP FOR TRANS FROM CAIRO ILL TO SPRINGFIELD ILL THENCE TO ST JOSEPH MO $12.58.”   [ILLINOIS CIVIL WAR DETAIL REPORT]  He is listed in the Civil War Pension Index: General Index to Pension Files, 1861-1934.  According to the pension card, he filed for the pension on? Oct. 29, 1890 and was listed as an Invalid.)  (From U. S. Civil War Soldiers, 1861-1865 and the Civil War Pension Index.)  (It is not yet known how this John Sifford is related to the Peter Sifford family.)

By the 1870 Federal Census, Abraham Sitter was still farming and had real estate valued at $2,000 and personal estate valued at $600, but is listed as having his home in Anna, IL.  By 1880 he is back in South Pass, IL., farming, with his wife and 9 of their children, all still single and at home.  A. L. Sitter is listed as a patron for the Atlas of Union County, ILL., of 1881 for Town 11 S R 1 W (Cobden).  By the 1900 Federal Census A. L. Sitter is still farming and widowed and living with three of his single daughters in Cobden, IL.  By the 1910 Federal Census, Abraham, age 75, a truck farmer, is living in Cobden, IL, part of Precinct No. 1, with one of his single daughters and a single granddaughter.  He is also next on the census to one of his son’s and family.  He may have still been in the Sifford house on Vines Rd. because his son, Charlie, lived across the road from the Sifford house.  Beside the Charlie P. Sitter family, his other neighbors included the Frank M. Bigler, the Harris Rendleman and the J. F. Stadelbacher families.

(1850, 1860 and 1870 Census of Anna, and Union Co., IL.)

Henry Treese 1833 or 34 or 35 – 1/18/1875 born in Union Co., IL., died in Anna, IL., at the age of 41yr, 11mo and 18days.  (Buried in the Casper Cem., # 255)  Henry was the brother of Maston Treece, who married Sarah Jane Sifford, and his parents were Alexander and Catherine (Hartline) Trees.  He married on 11/30/1856 (Bk 2-129) at the house of Leah Sifford, the bride’s mother, in Union Co., IL., with William C. Rich, a Justice of the Peace, officiating, to:

Lucinda (Sifford) 1/01/1832 – 10/06/1867 born in Union Co., IL., and died the age of 35 yr, 9mo and 5 days in Anna, IL.  (Buried in the Casper Cem. #?)

It is not known if any children were born to this union.

In the 1839 Tax List, Union Co., IL., Alexander Treas, the father of Henry and Maston Treese, had “4 horses worth $120, 9 cows worth $60, value of other personal property $150; total value of taxable personal property $330.”  Land: W ½ SW ¼ Sect. 8, Twnshp. 12 S R 1 W, 80 acres worth $4 an acre, $320.  According to the 1850 Federal Census Alexander Trees, age 49, was a farmer in Dist. No. 2, Union Co., IL., with real estate valued at $800.  His sons, Henry and Maston, were still single and living at home, as were five other children.

The 1860 Federal Census, Anna Precinct, did not list any children of Henry and Lucinda Treese, and Lucinda died in 10/06/1867.

On 2/14/1859 Jackson and Daniel Sifford’s adult siblings and their spouses sold their portion of 160 acres of land to Jackson and Daniel.  The land was originally the property of their father, Peter Sifford, and was the E ½ NE ¼ & NE ¼ SE ¼ & SW ¼ NE ¼ Sect. 32 Twnshp 11 S R 1 W, being 160 acres, more or less.

The 1860 Federal Census showed Jackson Sifford and family as a neighbor of his brother Silas Sifford and family and the George Vancil family, apparently along Wright’s Crossing Road, north of Cobden.  He was a farmer with real estate valued at $1,000 and personal estate valued at $300.

Jackson Sifford was listed in the “Union County, Illinois, 1862 Military Census”.

In 1866 Jackson and Rosena Sifford sold 2.76 acres of land to Julius Kasslitz for $102.  The land was in the NE ¼ NE ¼ Sect. 32 Twnshp 11 S R 1 W in Union Co., IL.

The 1880 Federal Census showed Jackson still in farming and with 11 children.  It did not list Edward, born in 1879, as one of the children.  Jackson Sifford is listed as a patron for the Atlas of Union County, ILL., of 1881 for Town 11 S R 1 W (Cobden).  According to “HISTORY OF ALEXANDER, UNION AND PULASKI COUNTIES, ILLINOIS” by Perrin in 1883, Jackson had 85 acres of land and was engaged in fruit and vegetable farming and general grain.  He and his wife were members of the Lutheran Church and a Democrat.

It is worth noting that the Sifford School was located on Sifford property that was located in SE ¼ NE ¼ Sect. 21 Twnshp 11 S R 1 W of Union Co., IL.

On 2/28/1893 Jackson Sifford bought an 8-plot lot, Block 004, Lot 053 in the Cobden Cemetery for $20.

On 2/21/1896, just six days before his death at the age of 61 years, Jackson Sifford wrote his last will and testament.  In it he requested that all of his just debts be paid in full.  He gave his wife Rosena SW ¼ NW ¼ Sect. 22 Twnshp 11 S R 1 W and SE ¼ NE ¼ Sect. 21, excepting a 20-rod square parcel in the NE corner, being 80 acres, more or less, and NE ¼ NE ¼ Sect. 21, being 40 acres, more or less, in Twnshp 11 S R 1 W.  After Rosena’s death all of the land would go to his sons equally.  His personal property would remain on the place and be used by his sons after the death of Rosena.  Each daughter received $100 from the sons within the first 5 years of the date of the will, one exception being his daughter, Sarah Davis, who would only receive $5.  Silas Sifford was to be the Executor of the last Will and Testament.

The 1900 Federal Census showed Rose (Rosena) Sifford, widowed and with 5 children still living at home.  It also showed that Rosena had had 12 children but only 10 of them were still living.  Apparently Edward, who was born in 1879, did not survive, since he was not listed on the 1880 census.  Birth records at the Union Co. Courthouse listed his birth.  William C. was the other child that did not survive.  He died in 1892.  (Have not been able to locate the 1870 Census of Jackson Sifford.)

The 1910 Federal Census showed 4 of the brothers, Lewis, Frank, John and Amos, and a sister, Delia Beaver and 3 of her children living together in Cobden, IL.  Lewis was a truck farmer and the other 3 brothers were listed as laborers.  The sister, Delia Beaver was listed as married for 12 years and having 3 children, all of whom were still living.  She was not listed as widowed, but no husband was listed.  By the 1920 Federal Census only the 3 brothers, Frank, Louis and Amos, are single and living together in Cobden, IL.  Frank is now the truck farmer and the other 2 are both listed as unemployed.  The 1930 Federal Census only shows Louis M. Sifford listed, a truck farmer, single, and his sister, Cora B. Sifford, living with him.  Cora was listed as divorced, having married at the age of 30 and she was now age 42.  (Specific marriage information not found.)

By the 1880 Federal Census the Maston Treece family is living in Anna, IL., and they are neighbors to 3 Treece families (Thomas, Walter and Singelton) and the Simon Cerney family.   He continues to be a farmer.  M. Trees is listed as a patron for the Atlas of Union County, ILL., of 1881 for Town 12 S R 1 W (Anna).  The 1900 Federal Census shows Maston and his family living in Anna Precinct #3, formerly Hess Precinct, they own their home, but have a mortgage on it, and he continues to farm.  The census also shows that Mastin and his wife have been married for 40 years and Sarah Jane had 11 children, but only 9 of them were still living.  Four of the children were still single and living at home.  They are living near two of their married sons and families, one of Mastin’s brothers, George, and the Walter Treece families.    By the 1910 Federal Census Sarah is widowed and living in Anna, IL., with two of her single children and a servant.  Only 7 of her children are now still living.  Some of her neighbors are Wm. and Pearl Dillow, her son Robert and his family, Mrs. Walter (Sarah) Treece and the Oscar Casper families.

Daniel Sifford was listed in the “Union County, Illinois, 1862 Military Census”.

The "ATLAS OF STATE OF ILLINOIS, UNION COUNTY, 1867", page 143, lists D. Sifford with a total of 80 acres in Sect. 21 and 22 in T 11 S R 1 W and a school on the property in Sect. 21.

On 11/02/1902 a Chancery Summons from Union County Circuit Court was given to Silas Sifford Executor of the Last Will of Jackson Sifford and thirteen other people, “to answer unto Adolphus Flamm, John Sweitzer, et al., the matters and things contained in their certain bill of complaint for Injustice etc.”  The summons was signed by William H. The 1910 Federal Census showed the widowed Susan C. Sifford living on Lincoln St, in Ward 1 of Anna, IL.  One of her unmarried daughters, Elizabeth, was living with her, and they lived next on the census page to her son, Henry C. Sifford and his wife.  It shows that Henry and his wife were married 10 years, but had no children.

The 1920 Federal Census shows Susan C. Sifford, age 77, widowed and still living with her single daughter Elizabeth, age 48. Her sister Isabelle Casper, age 67, was again living with them and single.  She was listed with them in the 1900 census, but not the 1910 census.  Susan was living at 205 Lincoln St., Anna, IL.  She owned her own home and had no mortgage.  The census showed that her daughter, Elizabeth, was a saleswoman in a bookstore.

Mary Elizabeth (Goodman) Oglesby (age 23) (divorced or widowed) 2 or 3/28/1856 or 1857 - 6/10/1905 from Cobden, IL., born in Union Co., IL., the daughter of Thomas and Nancy (Glascoe) Goodman.  Joseph Levix, Police Magistrate, officiated at the marriage and the witnesses were W. Kirkpatrick and W. Casey.  She died 6/10/1905 at "age 48 years” from “Apoplexey”.  She was “found dead”.  (Both are buried in the Cobden Cem. according to the death certificates - no markers or other documentation found.) (Birth date according to family Bible.)

2 children were born to Mary, but neither was living at the time of the 1900 census

Mary Elizabeth was an older sister of Andrew Jackson Goodman.  She had married and divorced Thomas Oglesby in Perry Co., IL.  The divorce information did not indicate that any children were born to their union.

The 1880 Federal Census showed Silas and Mary living in the South Pass area of Union Co., IL., apparently along Wright’s Crossing Road, north of Cobden, IL., with 2 of Silas’ unmarried children, John and Lucy.  Andrew Goodman, Mary’s brother, and another man were farm laborers living with them.  Silas was listed as a farmer.  The 1900 Federal Census still shows Silas and Mary living in the Cobden, IL., area along Wright’s Crossing Road, and only their son, John, still living with them.  Mary’s mother, Nancy Goodman, is widowed and living with them.

A Warranty Deed dated 7/10/1880, showed Mary E. Sifford and her heirs buying one acre of land, more or less, from John and Sarah Buck for $100, on the west side of Cobden, IL., around Ash and Centennial Streets.

The abstract of the land originally owned by Peter Sifford and then by Silas Sifford and his second wife, Mary E. Sifford, showed that after the death of Silas and after the death of Mary E. Sifford one year later in 1905, some of the property went to her mother, Nancy Goodman, and Nancy’s son-in-law and daughter, John and Annie Merchant, John Sifford and Lucy (Sifford) Goodman.  Nancy Goodman and her son-in-law and daughter John and Annie Merchant, sold their portion to Andrew J. Goodman, “on her part upon the agreement of the said Andrew J. Goodman to care for and provide for her during the remainder of her lifetime.” Nancy was his mother and when his widowed sister, Mary E. Sifford died, Nancy, who had been living with her daughter Mary, had no one to help care for her in her older years, so she put that language into the bill of sale of the property to insure that she would be cared for by her son.  (The property was along Wright’s Crossing Road, north of Cobden, IL.)

Mary’s mother, Nancy Goodman, had bought an 8-plot cemetery lot in the Cobden Cem., in 1891.  Silas died in 1904, Mary died in 1905 and Nancy died in 1909, and all three death certificates indicated they were all buried in the Cobden Cem., but no markers or gravestones of any kind have been found, and there is no documentation at the cemetery that any of them were buried there, just their death certificates stating it.  All three of them could have been buried in the 8-plot lot, Block #1, Lot #13, but there is no documentation to confirm this.

Compiler's note:

I will update this as I get more dates, etc. but all information except the Archibald Goodman information is verified on the back of marriage licenses or on birth or death certificates, or obituary notices, and other books that document early county history/records. I have listed many marriages and divorces and deaths that involve someone with the Goodman or Sifford names. Some of them or all of them may be related to this family but I have not yet been able to verify their connection. But they are still listed. This has been a fascinating adventure looking for all of the documents to prove information. We have been a lot of places and to a lot of court houses and libraries and cemeteries and on the internet, but we are not yet finished !!!!!!!!!!!!! Hope that you enjoy this bit of history.
